Do you wonder what you will become when you ‘grow up’? Can you imagine living into your true potential? Consider the change involved in becoming someone or something. Becoming involves the kind of change where there is no going back. It’s the knowledge that that caterpillar has the potential to be a butterfly and that that butterfly will never be a caterpillar again. Becoming in scripture involves a shift from one way of being to another. When our culture says ‘just be yourself’ Jesus calls us to become who he created us to be.
Jesus calls us to become. This becoming should transform all of the social roles, duties and obligations that form our identities. BECOMING shapes what we do and how we do it.
To say that we are ‘children of God’ is to BE something to BECOME something. To be a servant of Christ is to BE something. By Becoming we embody these remarkable social roles that Jesus calls us too. In becoming there are duties that we carry. In becoming there is a status to be embraced. In Becoming there are relationships to be experienced. Jesus takes our whole being, with real roles and real responsibilities and asks us to become.
Jesus calls us to become. To become Children of a Heavenly Father. To become a servant. To become a disciple. To become a believer. To become participants in a new creation.
