There are lots of people that have a problem with religion, after all haven’t unjust wars been waged in the name of religion. And it is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn’t it full of regressive views? Hasn’t it been used to justify Indian residential schools? And Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society?
On the other hand, many of the essential services of our society are because the church has taken the bible seriously and has started hospitals and senior’s homes, schools, and food banks, NGOs that deal with everything from famine, human trafficking and ecological stewardship. Followers of Jesus have a remarkable track record of taking action in the name of Jesus to see that justice is done.
But what about us? What about TMP? What about THIS church? What do we believe? What is the bible calling us to in 2018? Our Vision statement is ‘we will reorder our lives for the compassionate cause of Jesus in our friendships, city and world’ How will we do that?
In Isaiah 58 we are given a picture of what a God is calling us to, ““Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” and In Matthew 25 Jesus make clear, that Isaiah’s prophetic call continues to be God’s expectation of us” 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Religion then and religion now has often distorted God’s mission of justice in this world and for this world. In this series we will take a biblical look at justice, and we will consider how we can live out God’s call to a generous justice in our friendships, city and world. In this series we hear the call of God to “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5
